Excel Search Function

OAK’s Search tool expands your ability to locate information within your spreadsheets.

Excel’s in-built search functions only reach so far, the find command searches for cell formulas or values with a specified text string, selecting one matching cell at a time for review.

However, with OAK’s Excel advanced search function, you can locate a broader range of cell attributes. This is important, identifying cells not being referenced is crucial as they might be outputs from the model or unnecessary and should be deleted.

Excel also lacks a tool to find the original error value that is causing a string of mistakes. Our Search tool will help you find the issue and maintain Excel financial modelling best practices.

Use our in-depth Search function to find:

Arrays

Arrays are some of the most complex formulas in a workbook and require thorough examination and testing. Locate and review arrays, dynamic arrays and data tables, ensuring they are carefully evaluated before any insertion or deletion.

Review issues

Use our Excel advanced search function, to quickly and effectively locate issues within your spreadsheet. This works in impressive tandem with our Review tool.

Primary error cells

A single error value often spreads throughout a workbook, as any cells referencing that error value, either directly or indirectly, will typically produce further errors. OAK will find primary error cells to help you solve the problem.

Hardcoded constants

Hard coded values in formulas are notoriously difficult to find. OAK solves this issue, simply select a range and choose the option. A dialog will appear allowing you to exclude certain numeric elements from being treated as hardcoded constants.

Constant formula cells

Constant formula cells may be embedded as formulas, potentially going unchecked. Excel alone does not provide an automatic way to detect constant formula cells within formulas. OAK’s Search tool offers a solution.

Unreferenced cells

Best practice in spreadsheet model development dictates that the model should calculate only the necessary outputs, with all other calculations serving as intermediate steps. Therefore, unreferenced cells are either part of the model’s output or should be removed from the model. Find them with the Search tool.

Conditional search

Select cells within a range based on customized conditional criteria. This includes comparing numerical cell values to specified threshold values, searching for specific strings within cell values, or identifying strings within cell formulas.

References to blank cell

Formulas should not reference blank cells. Such references should either be deleted if unnecessary or replaced with another formula or input data. Find blank cells and reduce the risk of accidental deletion.
