The overwhelming majority of people only do simple things with spreadsheets: little more elaborate than managing lists, of, for example, the work rota or holiday plans for their team members, or checklists of various kinds. These people will find OAK's ability to compare spreadsheets useful. It is the most powerful way to see what has changed in different versions of the documents they prepare. In general, though, OAK is probably overkill for this group of spreadsheet users and it is not aimed at them. They probably don't have much need for an Excel add-in of any kind. If they do want one, they are likely better off with a less expensive, simpler alternative. To this end, Operis thinks highly of SpACE, Spreadsheet Auditing, Compliance and Examination. The acronym formerly stood for Spreadsheet Auditing for Customs & Excise, reflecting its origins as a tool developed by the British tax authorities to examine calculations of VAT (Value Added Tax). Its focus is simple spreadsheets of the kind submitted to the tax collector by millions of small to medium businesses. |
